Life Pulse of Yangtze - Ep1|

If we look at the earth from the vast universe, we can spy a gleaming river in Asia, the Yangtze River. Originating from the "Third Pole", the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, this mighty waterway is born of melting glaciers atop the Geladandong Mountain. The plateau, glaciers, wetlands, and grasslands work like an enormous reservoir and sponge, feeding the Yangtze River while providing water to hundreds of millions of people living along the river.

Following the river's course, a vibrant ecological tapestry of the highlands gradually reveals itself. In the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve, Tibetan antelope herds flourish, safeguarded by sustained anti-poaching patrols and a network of protection stations. In Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai, devoted rangers keep watch over rare birds such as black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese, ensuring their safe passage and unhindered breeding across wetlands and lakes. In the deer reserve in Changmaoling, Leiwuqi, Xizang, "red deer guardian" Xiangqiu Lamu and her family have dedicated two generations to protecting this species. Thanks to their efforts, the reserve now sustains a thriving population of more than 1,800 red deer.

From the glacial meltwaters of the Dangqu River and the Tuotuo River, the surging waters converge into the Tongtian River, racing toward Batang at the intersection of Xizang, Sichuan, and Yunnan, where the Yangtze River embarks on its new journey with the name the Jinsha River. Here, steep gorges and breathtaking scenery form the backdrop of the fabled "Shangri-La". This region not only draws avid hikers but also showcases the ingenuity of Chinese engineers. Dams like the Baihetan Hydropower Station stand as testaments to humanity’s wisdom to harness natural forces for clean energy.

In Yibin, the Minjiang River, as a tributary, merges into the Yangtze River, enriching its waters and biodiversity. The unique climate and water resources of the Minjiang River basin nurture the sweet bamboo beloved by giant pandas. Under careful stewardship, both captive and wild giant pandas live comfortably in this mountainous area.

As the Yangtze River flows out of Sichuan, it embraces Chongqing, the largest upstream metropolis, before carving through the legendary Three Gorges. Once a muse for poets and a treacherous flood corridor, this stretch now serves multiple purposes — flood control, power generation, and ecological protection — thanks to the Three Gorges Project.

When we look back upstream from here, the forest and grassland coverage in the source area of the Yangtze River has reached over 74%. The population of Tibetan antelopes has recovered from less than 20,000 to over 70,000. The number of snow leopards exceeds 1,000. In the past five years, the area of water bodies and wetland ecosystems in China’s Three-River Source National Park has increased by 309 square kilometers. When this great river flows towards its middle and lower reaches, it has taken on a new role as a core element in the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt which is closely linked to green ecological protection.
